Meta is building a 3D AI clone of CEO Mark Zuckerberg, while Y Combinator CEO Gary Tan released GStack — an open-source toolkit which gets Claude to perform various functions such as that of a CEO, engineer, or code reviewer.
So, what happens if AI becomes your new CEO?
For sure, AI offers the promise of 24/7 efficiency, lower costs, faster scaling, and enhanced data use. Companies assume that AI will “let a thousand flowers bloom” — a popular product design term referring to rapid experimentation or churn through scenarios to shortlist solutions, so that the best ideas scale.
But, even if an AI CEO takes on the data-driven tasks, I would argue that we don’t leave executive-level decision-making to it. Decisions require vision, context, judgment and have consequences, and it’s hard to feel safe with an AI in sole charge.
If an AI CEO takes a call that harms people or has unintended consequences, who’s to blame? Codification of product development and outsourcing it to AI, which can’t be held accountable, is a risk no one wants to underwrite.
When you work on a greenfield project from scratch and without constraints — the least-risk-nothing-to-lose scenario — going berserk and putting applications out to test seems easy. But if you want to scale, this approach doesn’t work.
Instead, you need processes in place and have to rely on community and skills — experience, collective judgment, intuition, and technical know-how — to keep the system running.
GStack can teach AI to think like specialists and boost a team’s performance, but it should not replace the team. A recent article spoke of how a CEO replaced an entire Quality Assurance team with AI to cut costs only to have it backfire and lead to losses. While organisations will incorporate AI tools, there’s no substitute for human judgment at critical decision points.
AI autonomous leadership is envisioned for a greenfield set-up where accountability is optional and consequences don’t spiral. The real world is anything but that, and a loss to balance sheet/credibility can prove to be a point of no return.
Would you trust an AI CEO or want to work under one?
