The evolution of AI has been an unpredictable race, full of twists and turns. As the year comes to an end, it’s a good time to chart the advances made.
Back in 2022, when OpenAI launched ChatGPT, it caught Google off guard. A “Code Red” was reportedly announced as Google scrambled with its AI chatbot launch.
Circa 2025, the tables have turned. Google has made a dramatic comeback — going from laggard to frontrunner — while China is making its AI ambitions clear and OpenAI is limping through the race.
The art of writing prompts took centrestage this year as “vibe coding” entered the dictionary, and “Agentic AI” made life easier as a digital assistant.
Bigger is not always better, and SLMs have shown that. Small language customised models were developed and have helped solve practical challenges faster and at lower cost this year.
2025 was also the year when tech CEOs turned their attention to space as a likely place to move data centres and make them more sustainable. The idea sounds straight out of a sci-fi novel or film, but it has many takers, including Elon Musk.
At the same time, explosive demand for AI has led to a shortage of memory chips and may lead to a hike in gadget prices next year.
There’s also growing concern on how AI presents a grey area for ethics and needs guardrails in place for responsible usage.

The topics I have written on this year have been on leadership, AI, systems thinking, and skilling. In 2026, what topics would you like me to write on? Let me know in the comments.
Wishing everyone a Happy New Year ✨
